When Visiting The US Virgin Islands Sailing Area There Are A Few “Must Sees”.
St. Thomas
Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the US Virgin Islands and is home to a large protected harbor where tourists arrive via cruise ships or the International Airport nearby. Visit the downtown shopping lanes for duty-free purchases. Up on Government Hill sits a watchtower known as Blackbeard’s Castle. After you climb up the 99 steps to the top, explore the tropical flower garden and tour the 18th-century ship-ballast brick castle with the best views over the bay and other islands in the distance.
Take the cable car near the cruise ship dock for unbelievable views over the island and bays. Meagan’s bay on the opposite side of the island has a long soft sandy beach with a bar and restaurant on the edge of the Caribbean blue waters. Charter yachts anchor nearby where you can enjoy water sports and take an island tour by safari taxis waiting ashore.
St. John
Cruz Bay on St. John is a short sail from St. Thomas. The small, protected bay is surrounded by resorts with pretty beaches. Walk up the road to Mongoose Junction for some shopping and dining or stop along the road for local street food and drinks. This is also a good start if you wish to take an island tour. Spectacular views can be enjoyed over the famous Trunk Bay. Drive along the shore all the way to the east end of the island for a cold beverage in Coral Bay. Here you can also hike to Ram’s Head.
In the protection of Maho Bay, you can enjoy water sports and watch one of the best sunsets on your week-long charter. Waterlemon Cay is on the Eastern side and is also very protected from the weather. Here your charter yacht can stay on a mooring ball where you can be dropped ashore to explore the famous Annaberg Ruins overlooking Leinster Bay
St. Croix
Sailing to St. Croix can be a lot of fun if you enjoy open-water sailing and deep-sea fishing. When you arrive in Christiansted you will see the historical Danish Fort which was erected to protect the entrance of the bay. Nearby is Buck Island which is great for snorkeling and exploring this neat island. Wall diving along the North Shore of St. Croix is a Scuba Diver’s dream. Wade into the ocean with your gear and soon descend as deep as you wish. You are in for a treat watching big sea life and coral walls of color on your wall dive.
Rent a Jeep and drive around the island or take an island tour with an experienced guide. The rainforest road leads to Fredericksburg and along the way you can stop for a drink and “feed the pigs beer” at Mt. Pellier Hut Domingo Club. Be sure to enjoy local cuisine on your tour of the largest of the US Virgin Islands. On the east side of the island, you will find a plaque to announce “The easternmost point of US soil”.
