Mykonos and Santorini are on everyone’s bucket list when they start to think about visiting the Greek Islands.
As the islands are quite a distance from Athens, where most yachts are based, and far apart from each other, it is not always possible to reach these islands in a week on a catamaran. Athens to Santorini is 137 nautical miles, Athens to Mykonos 86NM and 64NM in between.
If you plan to have your crewed yacht charter on a sailing catamaran or power catamaran you may wish to consider staying on land on Mykonos and/or Santorini before or after your charter. There is a great ferry service between the Greek Islands with a trip from Santorini to Mykonos taking around 1hr 55.
Depending on the yacht’s calendars it may be possible to pay a relocation fee and have the yacht pick you up or drop you off in Mykonos to enjoy some days before or after on land. As there are no marinas in Santorini boarding or disembarking there is not practical but the yacht could get to the nearby island of Ios for you to embark or disembark.
Weather does play a crucial part in which islands you will visit so itineraries need to be flexible. Any proposed or requested itinerary is always subject to the prevailing weather conditions and a more tailor-made one can be planned while onboard. If you have your heart set on seeing Mykonos or Santorini then staying in a hotel on land before or after your charter may be the best way to guarantee a visit.
Santorini is a volcanic island so the land shelves off very deep which means many yachts are unable to anchor there as it is just too deep. There are also no marinas on Santorini for a yacht to dock.
If you were to choose a motor yacht for your charter then visiting Santorini and Mykonos would be possible. The speed at which motor yachts travel would mean that you get to destinations faster. As Motor yachts are much larger they will have more crew and so are more likely to travel overnight so that you can wake up at a new island.
There are six different regions: Cyclades, Ionian, Saronic, Aegean, Sporades and Dodecanese. Due to their proximity to Athens, the most popular areas are the Cyclades and Saronic Islands.
